Humble, dignified, and born in Philadelphia’s historic Germantown section, Clarence Munroe Clark joined Fred Taylor to win the first United States Doubles Championship in 1881 at Newport, defeating Alexander van Rensselaer and Arthur Newbold, 6-5, 6-4, 6-5.
The following year in Newport, Clark attempted to add another trophy to the mantle, but fell in the singles final to Dick Sears, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0. He was a national singles semifinalist in 1884.
In 1883, Clark bicycled through Europe, and connected with his brother Joe in Great Britain to play a match against the famed Renshaw brothers, Willie and Ernest, a contest which the Renshaws won.
